Silver Cross Wayfarer Travel System Review

Silver Cross Wayfarer

What Silver Cross say about the Wayfarer

Wayfarer is the compact pram and pushchair system that takes modern urban living in its stride. Its light, flexible design helps you enjoy life to the full. It’s easy to handle on busy city streets and its ingenious one-piece fold mechanism makes it incredibly convenient to get in and out of the car.

Compact, lightweight and stylish, Wayfarer is the perfect pram system for modern, urban lifestyles. The package includes a lie flat carrycot for overnight sleeping and a pushchair seat unit for growing babies, so it’s suitable from birth to toddler. You can also create a complete travel system by adding a Simplicity car seat.

Our First Impression

At first glance we were very impressed with the Wayfarer, it is a beautiful buggy that will make you stand out from the crowd. The high end stylish look and feel of the Wayfarer is exactly what you would expect from a brand like Silver Cross.

They have definitely paid attention to detail when designing this buggy, from the sleek design and details such as the leatherette handlebar to the extra-large shopping basket, nothing has been overlooked.

What comes in the box

The Chassis
The chassis comes in two finishes, silver and black and is very lightweight at just 6.5kg. It comes with four way suspension, locking front swivel wheels, one touch braking, inline wheels giving a super compact fold, soft leatherette handle grip and multi-position lever with extra long extension.

Our Chassis came in the chrome finish which looked smart and really expensive, the detail on the chassis is really impressive.

Hood and apron pack
The hood and apron pack is compatible with both the carrycot and pushchair seat which means you don’t have to buy a separate one for each, which we really liked. They are really lovely quality and come in 7 beautiful colours; black, lime, chilli, raspberry, sand, sky blue and purple. We like the fact that you can easily update the buggy by changing the colour pack, either for a new baby or just for a change of look.

The carrycot was one of our favourite parts of this buggy. It is a really generous size and the padding inside is very soft and luxurious in a natural bamboo fabric which is both anti-bacterial and naturally cool. The mattress, which is also bamboo lined, was so much thicker and softer than most other carrycots we have looked at, creating the most cozy and comfortable environment for your newborn. The carrycot is extremely easy to take on and off the chassis but does require both hands, especially if your baby is already in the carrycot. The carrycot has been so comfortable for my baby, she loves sleeping in it and even prefers it to her cot, sometimes we just leave her sleeping in the carrycot when we get home.

Base Seat
The seat base is a generous size and can be used from around 6 months old. The seat can be used both forward and rearward facing in 3 reclining positions which can be adjusted with one hand without disturbing your child. The seat has a 5 point safety harness and also comes with a soft padded leatherette bumper bar, which looks really smart.

Rain cover
The Wayfarer also includes a really nice rain cover that is fantastic quality, it zips on and off easily and you can see through the plastic perfectly.

I like the added touch of this cupholder, it’s really handy for putting my coffee in when we are out for a stroll.

What isn’t included

The Silver Cross Simplicity car seat is sold separately but transforms the Wayfarer into a complete travel system.

You can also purchase a reversible seat liner in a choice of colours, a parasol in colours to match the colour packs and a changing bag to match the colour packs.

Was it easy to put together?

Yes, the Wayfarer was extremely easy to put together, you just need to pop the wheels and bumper bar on and add on the carrycot, hood and apron and you are ready to go. No more than 10 minutes.

Out and About

We were very excited to get the Wayfarer out and about to test it out properly. From the moment we stepped outside our front door the buggy turned heads and we felt very proud walking down the street with it.

Our first trip was going into town on the bus. The pram was very easy to get on and off the bus and was an absolute dream walking around the high street and shopping center. When going up and down kerbs we did have a little bit of difficulty with the wheels at first but once we got the knack of how to manoeuvre it properly we were fine. It isn’t particularly wide so was very easy to maneuver between the shopping isles and the large deep shopping basket was extremely handy and fit all of our weekly shopping in it plus a changing bag. I have to say it was a little hard to access when the carrycot was in use (but we did find it a lot easier to access when we switched to the seat base).

Our second outing was to the park where we had a little bit of difficulty with the Wayfarer as it wasn’t quite as easy to manoeuvre on uneven bumpy surfaces. We did find the wheels would get stuck a bit and it was less of a smooth ride, although it didn’t seem to bother the baby. It wasn’t too much of a problem, just not quite as smooth as it was in town.

Our next test was taking it out in the car which was another area where the Wayfarer excelled. It was so easy getting it in and out of the car. It is extremely easy to collapse and at just 6.5kg it is very lightweight so lifting it in and out of the car was no trouble at all, you can even put it in without removing the seat base (although the carrycot does need to be removed before collapsing). If you are collapsing it with the seat base attached it must be in the forward facing position. It didn’t take up too much space in the boot and could even free-stand in an upright position, which also proved very useful for storing it at home.

Car seat

The Silver Cross Simplicity car seat is sold separately for £135 but transforms the Wayfarer into a complete travel system. The Simplicity is a Group 0+ rated infant carrier that is suitable from birth to 13kg (approx 9-12 months old) and can be paired with the Simplifix Isofix Car Seat base for a simple and safe one click system.

We found using the Simplicity car seat very easy to use. It slots on and off the chassis really easily and fixes on to the Simplefix car seat base with just one click. It displays green lights when secure which makes it incredibly straightforward to tell when it is correctly in place. You do need both hands free when putting the car seat in and out of the car if the baby is in the car seat already as it is then quite heavy.

The car seat includes a 5 point safety harness, which can be adjusted with one hand and a comfy headrest, there is plenty of padding inside the car seat and the harness also has extra padding to keep your baby nice and comfortable. The head support height can be adjusted as your baby grows. The fabric inside the car seat can be removed easily for cleaning. The car seat also comes with a padded hood and apron that can match your carrycot and base seat.

We found using the car seat with the chassis really handy when just nipping out to do some shopping as we could let the baby continue to sleep and just pop the car seat in to the Simplefix base and then onto the chassis without waking her.

Can the Wayfarer be used with other car seats?

Yes, you can purchase car seat adaptors for the Maxi-Cosi Pebble or Cabriofix.

Value for money

At £595 we feel that the Wayfarer is excellent value for money. The chrome frame and stunning fabrics make the buggy look and feel a lot more expensive than it is. Everything that comes with it from the quality apron and hood to the luxurious carrycot offer remarkable value for money.

Mama Style’s Verdict

We absolutely love this travel system. It’s probably not one for country living but is the perfect pram for urban mums. It is a dream to use in city centers and shopping areas and will fit into a small car with ease. It is lightweight, functional, stylish and built to last so will grow with your child and last for the next child too.

Mum’s Verdict

This buggy has so many good points it’s hard to summarise. It is amazing for using around town and in the shops. It’s really easy to swap between the carrycot, seat base and car seat and I love that you can update the look of the buggy by changing the colour pack, we will definitely be doing this for our next child.

Dad’s Verdict

This is a really great buggy, not only does it have useful features like the adjustable handle bar height, which is great for a tall dad like myself, but it also looks very stylish for both me and my wife to use. I found it really easy to manoeuvre and I like the fact that my wife can get it in and out of the car easily when I’m not around. The compact design also means that it doesn’t take up much space when storing it at home. I also like that the seat can be forward facing and outward facing. This is definitely one for both mums and dads.
